Thomas McConnell told Beatles Examiner Aug. 30 it was his mother who gave him the idea to do the cover of Paul McCartney's new song “New” that has received a lot of praise, including from one of McCartney's guitarists.
McConnell, 20 from Liverpool, posted his video of the song the same day as McCartney released it.
“I decided to do it when my mum asked, 'Have you learned the new Paul tune yet?' and I thought 'I will now!,'” the 20-year-old Liverpudlian said. “Only took about 10 minutes, I think.” You can see the video on this page.
His version has received a lot of praise from those who have heard it, including from McCartney guitarist Brian Ray, who posted this comment with the video, “Great job, Thomas! Nice playing, spirit and singing.”
According to MusicCrowns.org, he began composing around the age of 11. His heroes include McCartney and Eric Morecombe (of the comedy group Morecombe & Wise). He released his debut single last October and has performed at the Cavern.
“Paul's my hero, so I always learn his new stuff when it comes out,” McConnell said. “But I only thought to post it yesterday ... The response has been phenomenal ... I heard the song that morning and by the evening (I) was talking to Brian Ray about it!”
McConnell has his own channel on YouTube and Soundcloud page that includes other Beatles/McCartney covers of “The Back Seat of My Car,” “Only a Northern Song” and “The Night Before.” He is a working musician who also performs his own compositions. One of his songs is “Stop in the Shade.”
He says he'd love for McCartney to see the new video.
“I'd love to get it to Paul somehow.”
