Clint Dempsey's signing for the Seattle Sounders has created quite a stir of headlines and on Saturday he made his starting debut for Seattle against Houston at BBVA Compass Stadium and the San Antonio Soccer Examiner caught up with Dempsey after the match.
SASE: What is it like being back in Texas?
Clint Dempsey: Yeah, it's always good to be back in Texas, I had my family here, obviously it would have been nice getting another result. It's hard because these guys are all mid-season and this was my first full 90 in a while, my last was with the national team. All in all I think I had some good chances but I thought the last goal we conceded was weak, we can't concede goals like that if we want to get points.
SASE: How hard is it to come in and gel with the team?
CD: You have to work on things, and see what your best line-up is going to be, and when you have injuries and suspensions but it was good to get a full 90 tonight. I'm starting to catch form and everyone is mid-season but I'm pleased with where I'm at and hopefully I can get back to top form.
SASE: Your last MLS Game in Texas was the 2006 MLS Cup Final, how much has changed since then and now?
CD: Yeah, I've talked about that a lot, more soccer specific stadiums, more fans coming to games. You know, more American players becoming DPs which is good to see. I think the level is getting better and as you can see there are players in this league, when they do well they go on to the national team and they fight for a place in the starting 11 so it's a good league.
SASE: Was it hard in this match, you seemed kind of isolated up front and had to get back a lot to get possession and Houston seemed to be playing you physically was that challenging?
CD: No, I didn't think it was too physical, I thought I had some good touches and put some people through and maybe could have had an assist. I had a few looks at goal and maybe should have had an assist but all-in-all I'm happy with my performance. Maybe I would have liked to have some more touches towards the end of the game, I started getting tired from the 70th minute on but I thought we had some good chances we created for ourselves and I thought what hurt us was conceding that last one in the way we did.
The San Antonio Soccer Examiner would like to thank the Seattle Sounders and Clint Dempsey for taking the time after the match to grant this interview.
