“Scandal” star Kerry Washington is having one hell of a year. From starring in the Oscar winning film “Django Unchained” to headlining Thursday nights as Olivia Pope on ABC’s hit series “Scandal,” the actress is a staple on the Red Carpet. Washington is nominated in the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for her work on the show. Whether she’s a magazine cover girl or a regular at award shows, you’d think that staying red carpet ready would be second nature to the busy actress. Sporting a pink cocktail dress from Halston Heritage this week at the Primetime Emmys Reception celebrating Diversity in Television, Washington told Classic TV Examiner that she has a lot of help.
“People get paid good money to help me look like this,” the actress laughed when Examiner asked how she managed to look so beautiful in each outing. She admits that simple jeans and a sweatshirt is her go-to outfit of choice on her days off. When deciding what to wear on Emmy night, Washington is consulting with her co-presenter Diahann Carroll. The two actresses presenting together highlights an historic moment in television history. Carroll starred in the ground-breaking series “Julia,” where she was the first African American actress to star in a series in a non-domestic role.
Washington’s starring role in “Scandal” mirrors Carroll’s as she heads the D.C. series about political scandal in a local law firm that leads to the White House. “Scandal” is one of the few dramas on television that features actors of color in major roles, headlined by Washington’s always in demand, Olivia Pope.
In the third season of “Scandal,” which premieres on Thursday, October, 3rd, Olivia’s name surfacing as the president’s mistress will be the biggest scandal to date for both the White House and Pope & Associates. Fortunately, a “surprise allegiance” will be formed “in order to get things handled.”
