Intersate 15 freeway still closed in Hesperia

The Interstate 15 freeway is still closed in Hesperia since the fire that started on the Ranchero Road bridge yesterday is still burning. KFI 640 on the AM radio dial is announcing updates about every half hour. A dispatch from California State Assemblyman Tim Donnelly states that the fire on the bridge, which is under construction, began at 1:30 p.m. on May 5.

San Bernardino County Fire Department, Office of Emergency Services reported yesterday afternoon:

All lanes of the northbound and southbound Interstate 15 (I-15) are closed at Ranchero Road in the City of Hesperia. The closures are due to a fire on the overpass under construction.
Per Caltrans southbound traffic is being diverted off at Main Street. Northbound traffic is being diverted off at Highway 39ORRECTION: Northbound traffic is being diverted off at Oak Hills
Severe backup of northbound and southbound traffic is expected. Commuters are advised to avoid the area.

The City of Hesperia Emergency Operations Center (EOC) was activated to Level 1 at 2:20 p.m. due to the impact of diverted freeway traffic affecting the City.

Reports indicate that a welder accidentally set a wooden support on fire while cutting rebar, also known as reinforcing steel and reinforcement steel, is a common steel bar or mesh of steel wires commonly used to reinforce concrete structures. California Department of Transportation (Cal Trans) states that the project is led by an independent contractor, not by Cal Trans.
