SiVIC, the Silicon Valley Interreligious Council, has annuounced an effort to enlist 100 congregations across the South Bay in the effort to improve the health, sustainability, and justice of their food.
Food plays a central role in most religious communities, and thus congregations are well situated to play an important role in changing food choices. The values of care and compassion for people and stewardship of the earth and its resources combine to give religious communities the potential to be agents of change within the food system.
To help congregations make these changes, SiVIC has developed a pledge form focused on four categories: snacks/drinks, meals, education, and personal choices. Recognizing that communities are at different stages of working on healthy food choices, each category has a variety of options from beginning levels to more extensive commitments.
The overall goal is to enlist 100 congregations in making some pledge to move toward more environmentally sustainable, socially just, and healthier food choices.
Throughout the year, SiVIC will highlight success stories on its website and in its news releases, and plans to hold a Healthy and Sustainable Congregations Banquet to celebrate the community's success at the end of the year.
