Interpol brings their brand of brooding indie rock to Tampa

New York based indie rock outfit, Interpol are coming to Tampa this Thursday in support of their self-titled fourth album, which was released in September of last year. Going on their fourteenth year making music, the post punk infused trio will be performing at the Ritz Ybor with indie darlings School of Seven Bells, who played Crowbar back in "HIPtober".

Forming in 1997, Interpol's first album entitled Turn on the Bright Lights received critical acclaim after its release in 2002; drawing comparisons to the early 80s post-punk sound of bands like Joy Division. After the releases of Antics and Our Love to Admire (in 2004 and 2007, respectively) the band achieved commercial success; having several singles on the UK Top 40 charts and reach gold status in both the UK and the United States.

Their sound produces more than just an ambiance when experienced live. The heavy yet rhythmic guitars and the detached nature of their bass lines are perfectly accompanied by the spacey and looming sound of keys and percussion. Together with Paul Banks', at times, monotonous (but in a good way!) vocals leave show-goers in an almost trance-like state. However, their shows can switch from a brooding hum that allows for only a slightly swaying motion from their fans, very quickly into an all out party that let's all those awkward hipsters show off their best Breakfast Club dance scene impersonations (I'm guilty of this myself).

Doing more than just warming up the stage for the indie rock veterans is  opening act, School of Seven Bells. I was lucky enough to see them when they played back in October and am ecstatic to be seeing them again. Even with the departure of Claudia Deheza who was one-third of the band (not to mention identical twins with other band member Alejandra) just before their Tampa stop, the trio-turned-duo, brought it hard and left spectators speechless and in awe. Their dreamy sound will be the perfect way to open a show that promises to be one of the best of 2011 and a great way to end your school year/kick off your summer!

Tickets are $24 in advance and $26 at the door, but No Clubs Productions (who are bringing us this gem!) is very confident that the show will sell out prior to doors and encourages all fans to purchase them ASAP. Daddy Kool Records (located at 666 Central Ave in St. Pete) and their online store both have tickets available, as of now. I, too, urge you to get on your ticket buying! This is definitely a not-to-be-missed show and you know you'll be kicking yourself if you miss the opportunity to see two such talented bands perform on the same bill.
