One of the best things about a cruise vacation is being able to "disconnect" from the real world. This is a blessing and a curse, because for those of us who can't truly "unplug" during a vacation, you're stuck in a panic searching for Wi-Fi and paying big fees for it. As an Authorized Disney Vacation Planner specializing in Disney Cruises I'm asked these questions a lot, particularly by new cruisers. So let's take a look at what you need to know regarding internet for your cruise.
Can you get internet service on Disney Cruise Line?
Yes. Is it efficient and affordable? Not so much.
Where can you get internet on Disney Cruise Line?
The Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy have WiFi hotspots at the Cove Cafe (deck 11) and the Vista Cafe (deck 4) and the Disney Magic and Disney Wonder offer internet cafes on deck 3 with desktop computers, in the Promenade Lounge area.
The Disney Fantasy and Disney Dream do not have internet cafes with desktop accessibility, they do however have laptops available for a fee that will connect to the wireless internet if you choose to leave your own device at home.
The desktop computers in the Promenade Lounge area are not equipped with Microsoft programs, cannot open or download attachments and cannot allow software uploads or downloads.
What is the cost for internet on Disney Cruise Line?
You can pay as you go, with the standard rate at $.75 per minute (subject to change) or purchase packages of time, based on your cruise length.
For cruises 7-nights or less
- Pay as you go $.75 per minute
- 50 min for $27.50 ($.55 per minute)
- 100 min for $40.00 ($.40 per minute)
- 250 min for $74 ($.30 per minute)
For cruises 7-nights or more
- Pay as you go $.75 per minute
- 100 min for $55.00 ($.55 per minute)
- 250 min for $100 ($.40 per minute)
- 500 min for $150 ($.30 per minute)
How internet packages work
If you purchase a package you can use the minutes across different devices and use the internet cafe (Magic and Wonder) or connect to Wi-Fi with your own device. You will create a login when you purchase your package and it will keep track of your minutes used.
Before you purchase a package beware that there are no credits issued for unused minutes and you can't upgrade your package once you choose it.
Speed of internet service at sea
When you are logging into internet at sea, there will be multiple warnings about the internet service at sea. Do not take these lightly, they aren't exaggerating. Imagine the slowest internet connection possible, and then make it worse. Then you have almost comprehended how slow the service at sea is.
If you have no true need for internet onboard I would recommend saving your money. Even a quick "I'll just login to check my email" is going to cost you $10, at minimum.
Many ports have multiple places with free Wi-Fi or connection for a fee that's far less in cost and far more efficient. Many places will advertise the Wi-Fi, so you should be able to find out where to go for internet connection in port fairly quickly. The best way to find out where there is free internet is to ask the crew. The crew knows the ports better than anyone, as they sail there regularly and use their port days to connect with family and friends.
