Internet Marketing 101: What is e-mail marketing?

E-mail marketing is a form of direct marketing which uses electronic mail to communicate commercial and fund-raising messages to an audience.

There are four main types of e-mail marketing:

1. Sending e-mails with the purpose of enhancing relationships with previous customers, increase customer loyalty and encourage repeat business.

2. Sending e-mails to acquire new customers or convince current customers to buy something immediately, for instance a special sale or promotion.

3. Adding your company's advertisements to emails sent by other companies to their own customers.

4. Sending e-mails over the Internet, as e-mail exists outside the Internet (FIDO*, network e-mail*)

Definitions:

FIDO*-Mobile mail, email sent to cell phones, blackberries and other mobile devices.

Network E-mail*-Sending email to a particular network of individuals directly. The most commonly used type of network e-mail are the simple address books most people have in their e-mail client to distribute e-mails to their own network of friends, family and colleagues.
