Some comic geeks have been left wondering whether Warner Bros. has hired the Joker as a casting director. Earlier today major news outlets such as The New York Daily News reported that Ben Affleck will star as Batman in the upcoming sequel to “Man of Steel.” Maybe director Zack Snyder realized that cut Christian Bale is noticeably bigger than cut Henry Cavill.
Batman fans have taken to the internet to express their displeasure, many citing Affleck's starring role in the flopped “Daredevil” of 2003. Shortly after the announcement, Change.org became host to 30 separate petitions asking Warner Bros. to drop Affleck from the film.
“Really looking forward to seeing Affleck bring the depth and gravitas to Batman that he brought to Daredevil and Gigli,” tweeted Wil Wheaton.
Staff at Mashable and Silicon Republic wasted no time in sharing mean-spirited memes with the jeering crowds of nerds. However, not everyone voicing opinions is upset. Buzzfeed published an article showing Twitter users on both sides of the fence.
Snyder defended the casting choice. “Ben provides an interesting counter-balance to Henry's Superman,” he said in a statement. “He has the acting chops to create a layered portrayal of a man who is older and wiser than Clark Kent and bears the scars of a seasoned crime fighter, but retain the charm that the world sees in billionaire Bruce Wayne. I can't wait to work with him.”
