International Women's Day

First celebrated in 1911, IWD celebrates women's accomplishments and raises awareness about issues that affect women around the world. Men and women observe IWD by participating or organizing events that inspire women and celebrate their many economic, political and social achievements. Governments, businesses, corporations, schools, charities, women’s groups and individuals participate in all sorts of events that span the globe. But despite significant gains over the years, many women still face gender discrimination, lower pay and education, insufficient healthcare and violence.

With a different theme every year, this year's theme is "Inspiring Change." The United Nations also has an official theme to celebrate the occasion. This year's UN theme is "Equality for Women is Progress for All."

IWD Google Doodle

Once again, the creative folks at Google are celebrating the occasion with a special International Women's Day Google Doodle. The IWD Google Doodle features 27 female chromosomes and a video showcasing more than 100 women from around the world. Dora the Explorer and a few other famous faces make an appearance in the video.
