International TableTop Day coming in March

If you'd like an excuse to spend a Saturday playing tabletop games, then mark your calender for March 30, the first International TableTop Day. Felicia Day announced the event today on her premium YouTube channel, Geek & Sundry, home of the show “TableTop” hosted by Wil Wheaton, known from “Star Trek” and “Big Bang Theory.” Besides local events around the world, Day and Wheaton will be live streaming their own TableTop Day gaming sessions on Geek & Sundry.

The event celebrates one year since the launch of “TableTop,” a show where Wil Wheaton plays a tabletop game with three or four other minor celebrities. Fan interaction with the show is especially evident on Twitter, where people regularly report to @Wilw that they have bought a game because they saw it on the show or used the show to convince someone to try a game.

According to Geek & Sundry, the industry has noticed. John Zinser, president of Alderac Entertainment Group said, “In the 20 years I've been in the game industry, nothing has moved the needle the way TableTop has. We're proud to be a partner for International TableTop Day and take Geek & Sundry's success to the next level.” Other TableTop Day sponsors include Asmodee, Days of Wonder, Mayfair Games, Steve Jackson Games and Wizards of the Coast.

Check out TableTop Day's official website and interactive map, but don't be surprised if there aren't any events in your area yet. Since this was just announced today, many game stores might not have even heard of the event, so everyone is encouraged to take some initiative in creating buzz. Remember there are free promotional items available to game stores. Also, the official hashtag #tabletopday is already full of announcements, so check it out to see who else is saying, “I'm playing on #TableTopDay!”
