The International Press Academy handed out its awards this week just before the Oscars, and although it is not usually a predictor of Academy winners, it does tend to honor movies and TV shows that often get overlooked by award shows.
Two big honors, the Best Ensemble Cast awards went to the movie "Nebraska" and the TV show "Orange is a New Black."
Sherman Oaks resident June Squibb won the Best Supporting Actress award for "Nebraska."
The official winners for the 18th Annual Satellite™ Awards honor categories in Film, Television, Blu-ray DVDs, and Video Games. The based-on-a-true story “12 Years a Slave” received Motion Picture and Director honors, while “Dallas Buyers Club’s” Matthew McConaughey won for Actor in a Motion Picture along with Actor in a Supporting Role winner Jared Leto. The IPA selected Cate Blanchett as Actress in a Motion Picture for "Blue Jasmine."
Headlining the TV award winners were “Breaking Bad” and “Orange is the New Black.” Bryan Cranston won for Best Actor, Drama, and Taylor Schilling received a nod for Best Actress, Comedy or Musical.
In a gala ceremony held at the Intercontinental Hotel in Culver City, Calif., the eclectic group of journalists and reviewers celebrated the distinguished accomplishments of artists in 38 categories, and also paid tribute to its Special Achievement honorees, Mike Medavoy (Mary Pickford Award), Garrett Brown (Tesla Award), Guillermo del Toro (Auteur Award), Gabrielle Tana (Independent Producer of the Year Award), and Ryan Coogler (Honorary Satellite Award).
Other honorees include Michael B. Jordan, Breakthrough Performance Award, and Sophie Nélisse, Breakthrough Performance Award in "The Book Thief."
The IPA is a global association of professional entertainment journalists representing a multitude of print, broadcast, and digital media outlets. It's membership also includes FEDEORA, The Federation of European and Mediterranean Film Critics, which joined the IPA in 2011, extending the IPA’s membership of foreign and domestic correspondents, whose markets reach millions worldwide via print, television, radio, and the Internet. The group's founder Mirjana von Blaricom is from Sherman Oaks.
The awards have often turned into raucous and unpredictable events, such as the year Cloris Leachman made snoring sounds during the video tribute for director Peter Bogdanovich, who directed her Academy Award winning role for The Last Picture Show. Her co-star Timothy Bottoms gave her a long deep kiss on stage and he said, “I learned that from you in the movie.” Then, when reading the tribute, Leachman stopped and said, “Can we read this a little faster? I’m getting hungry.”
Courtney Love surprised audiences for attending the awards and giving out a special honor to Mike Medavoy, who helped her through her addictions.
Best Animated was given to "The Wind Rises" instead of the favored "Frozen" that won most other shows, and Robin Wright won for Netflix's "House of Cards." John Goodman won for Best Actor on TV for "Alpha House" which is only available on Amazon.
Hal Sparks hosted the show with Steven Conor and Kendra Munger as co-hosts.
"It's hard to think of any of these as the best, since they are so different," Sparks said, referring to the difference of Cate Blanchett's role in "Blue Jasmine" as a socialite who loses everything to Sandra Bullock playing an astronaut stuck in a capsule through most of the movie "Gravity."
