If there is something to be said for sticking to your story then Jill Sander is made in the shade. She remains true to her original vision about her collection and no one does it better than she. Now that all the other designers have had their “Jil” moment we can go back to looking at the one original Jil.
I am not the greatest fan of such minimalist fashion but I can appreciate the pure esthetic that she uses and has with regard to her clothes. The make is impeccable, the fabrics are rich and luxe and the look of it all belongs to her as she did it first and best. I am thrilled to see that she gave her models some life in their faces and not the wan vampirish look of days gone and it helps to take the edge off the already razor sharp lines of the collection.
As I have said before, there is something innate about a designer who can make heavy fabrics appear light as Ms. Sander has so skillfully done and how Ms. Prada has so offensively done. No matter the volumes of the shapes, the clothes appear to be weightless and as if they gently sit atop the body as opposed to a body that supports the weight of the garments… i.e. Prada!
There is not much one can say other than this is 100% Jil and one must appreciate the perseverance and dedication that she has to continually evolve the collection while never straying far from her DNA. Few in the design community can lay claim to that. I did adore the knits, the double faced cashmere coats and most of all I had to smirk when I saw the Jil Sander version of evening … a slash of gold placed somewhere on the garment. I did however notice that one piece, I believe, was lined in gold which speaks fluently to the discretion of the Sander esthetic.
Welcome back Fraulein Sander…it so nice to have you back where you belong!
