Bollywood is the mainstream as far as Indian music is concerned, but India’s got a billion people, and it’s broken up into many states. I rep one of the northern states: Punjab. Our language is Punjabi, and I do Punjabi music. Bollywood is influenced by Punjabi music, but we have our own vibe and our own thing. [It’s like how] hip-hop from New York is different than Justin Bieber doing hip-hop. Justin Bieber doing hip-hop isn’t hip-hop. That’s what Bollywood is to us. I’m like New York hip-hop. I’m a Punjabi desi, so that’s equivalent to your Jay-Z, your hip-hop. I’ve done Bollywood; I’ve worked in that industry. But they really water the stuff down, [commercialize] it for the masses, and more importantly, they dumb it down. It’s dumbed down with cheesy sounds. And you don’t have much choice because you’re asked to do a specific job for a specific genre. But with [the single “Have a Toast”], we got to experiment and have fun, and it’s undiluted. That’s what I enjoy about the process.
“Have a Toast” is DJ Sanj’s international single with platinum artist DJ Unk, multi-platinum artist Taz – Stereo Nation, DJ Nihal, DIRTY MOB, and Lost Stories. You can watch the video for the song here.
