International Opinion Review February 27 2014 President Obama Asia and China

Writing in the Asia Times at “A Spring-song for the ‘Pacific President’”, Ernest Z Bower, senior adviser and Sumitro Chair for Southeast Asia Studies at the Center for Strategic & International Studies notes that it is time for President Obama to act as America’s self-proclaimed “first Pacific President". Asia is increasingly important, Bower writes as “The geopolitical calculus clearly defines the need for the United States to be comprehensively invested in Asia.” Obama must lead US to new, more open thinking about Asia. His self proclaimed “pivot” is necessary and welcomed by many, if not all, Asian nations. Bower details 5 important steps President Obama can take, from educating the American people of the necessity of close ties to Asia, to making full use of his upcoming Asian trip.
