Interior design for compact spaces: trendy living & dining for a prefab home

This is a story to share with those that believe and think that professional designers only work or are interested in big projects and budgets.  Sometimes, homeowners have the idea that hiring an expert is unaffordable; others think that designer’s fees are too high to design these tiny spaces.   Check the impact of trendy interior and lighting designs for this dining and living rooms that belong to a prefab house that has a total of 850 square feet of livable spaces.

This prefab system embraces sustainable and stylish architectural design.  Solar energy, usage of natural light and selection of environmentally friendly products and finishes are some of the design qualities that were taken in consideration.   To complement the house concept, the interior spaces follow the notion of ecological design without compromising elegance and character.

The color scheme reflects Miami’s livable and natural assets.  The different textures of textiles, area rugs, bamboo flooring and minimal decorative accessories uplift the modern architectural style of the house.   The minimalist design of the wooden dining set showcases its table with frost glass top.  The chic design of the chairs blends wood and metal elements with the beige leather seats.

White custom-designed units cover the lateral walls of the house.  The cabinet shown in the living room functions as dining room storage and T.V./audio/music unit.  Loveseat and occasional furniture were selected for flexible setting and balancing the organic design of the living room area rug.

To enhance the height of the house and its clerestory, the lighting design was conceived functionally and aesthetically.  A system of organic metal rods, rails and cables hold the different lighting fixtures for dining and living rooms.   Pendant glass fixtures divide livable spaces while fixed light metal headers provide general and task lighting.  Wall sconces and floor lamps complement the lighting design approach.

Minimalist, elegant and trendy design is applicable to any space and it usually remains classy and refreshing.  Research for a local design professional to reflect your current lifestyle and create your home sanctuary.

Note: this project belongs to Florida International University; in which schools of Architecture & Interior Design, Engineering, English and others worked together to enter in the International Solar Decathlon  Competition in Washington D.C in 2005.  Faculty staff, graduate and undergraduate students collaborated and designed this prefab system to supply the international demand of housing for those families that lose their homes in natural catastrophes or for the construction of communities of low income families.  The writer was in charge of the interior, furniture & lighting designs concepts and their execution for this project.
