As a Chihuahua pet parent or one considering adopting one of these amazing little creatures, it is important to understand all its special attributes. Either you love the breed or you don’t; however most individuals who love the small dog adores the Chihuahua. If there is more you need to know, contact the local Rockford-area Humane Society or your veterinarian as listed below or one closest to your home with any questions or concerns about the little dog with a huge personality.
The Chihuahua is said to be the smallest of breeds. Although the Chihuahua is a loyal companion and snugly lap dog, it is not a breed for everyone. Being very alert and attentive, this vocal little family member tends to be a great” watch” dog. Because of their energies, nervousness and tiny size, the Chihuahua is not always the best choice for a family with small children. Much thought and consideration should go into choosing a new dog like the Chihuahua.
With the recent Chihuahua movies, exemplifying the cute antics of the adorable breed of dog, the population of adopted Chihuahuas exploded. The problem is that many families realized there is a lot more to this little dog that did not fulfill all their needs and expectations. Suddenly the shelters were full of unwanted tiny dogs, which is very sad. Before choosing a dog, be sure to do your homework to make an educated decision to fit the needs of your family.
It is believed that the Chihuahua was an important part of the Toltecs, an ancient Mexican civilization that spans as far back as the 9th century. At that time the Techichi (as they were known back then) was a revered breed of dog. Somehow the breed was lost in history until the 1800s and named “Chihuahua” after the northern Mexican state where many statues of the breed were found. Many relics of this little dog were subsequently found in Mexico City and the rest, as they say, is history.
The Chihuahua, as tiny as it is, thinks of itself as a powerful Great Dane and stand up to any other dog, despite its’ size. On the other hand, they may appear to be afraid of its’ own shadow. Their personalities vary a great deal. One thing is for sure; they love their pet parents greatly and are very protective of their families.
Most often the Chihuahua is said to be a one person dog which is not always true. The disposition of your dog depends upon a combination of their genetic upbringing and how you raise, train, socialize and pamper them. They do have bold personalities. However, they do not do well with small children since they can be very fragile and easily get hurt. Children also have a tendency to pull on ears and tails which is unfavorable to this little guy who may nip or bite.
Any aggressive antics of the Chihuahua are highly due to their fears. The reasons they may bark excessively in a courageous manner is their way of being brave (remember, they think they stand ten feet tall). There are pros and cons to having this little breed of dog. The first pro, of course, is their companionship. They just love to snuggle and sit in your lap for hours on end.
The tiny Chihuahua loves to be carried, comes in various sizes and colors in both short and long hair. They love warmth and will find the smallest spot of sunlight in the home to lie in. When not in the sun, they will be snuggling under some covers somewhere. They can be very fun and entertaining to watch and do some of the cutest things. As stated, the Chihuahua makes an excellent watch dog. They will alert you of strangers’ way before the doorbell rings. They do not require a lot of exercise and make great pets for small spaces, are best with older children and adults and live up to 16 years of age.
The disadvantages of owning a Chihuahua may be that they are a little harder but not impossible to housebreak, they are a frail breed of dog to have around small children, some have barking issues, they do shed, and there are potential health issues. This little dog is a fairly healthy breed although some may be prone to a luxating patella, heart murmur, hypoglycemia, hydrocephalus, urinary and tracheal problems. Choosing a dog through a reputable breeder and keeping up with routine veterinary care will guarantee a healthy pup.
The Chihuahua requires minimum grooming such as dental care, clipping the nails, cleaning the ears and regular baths. The long-haired varieties also should be brushed daily and may need an occasional haircut. Keeping up with required doctor visits, tests, dental care, vaccinations and other health preventative measures, your Chihuahua can live a long, happy and very healthy life. They are a joy to have around, so enjoy them, love them, train them and share the quality time together that you and the family deserve.
