The InterContinental Chicago O’Hare  celebrated the launch of its new gallery exhibit, Crossroads, with a private reception on Wednesday, December 2nd from 6 pm to 8 pm. Chicago galleries and select artists convened in the hotel’s distinguished art Museo to view the exhibition and take in performance by installation artist Sara Schandt.

Sara Schandt explains her installation Network Hub: "As the second-busiest airport in the world by passenger traffic, O’Hare has a vast range of destinations and connections. Inspired by the varied worlds, networks, cultures, and further departure points a traveler can access from O’Hare International airport, Network Hub plots a three-dimensional visualization of travel from Chicago as an intricate and potentially infinite system of relationships.

Silver string: Connects the central ring (representing Chicago) to the other 9 busiest airports in the world by their mutual travel patterns.

Yellow string: Represents all departures (installed chronologically as a live performance at the opening reception for Connections) from Chicago O’Hare during the time-frame of the performance - 6:30 to 7:30 pm, Wednesday December 2nd."

This unique exhibition space features works from nine Chicago galleries and three artists without gallery representation. Pieces in all media, from traditional: painting, drawing, printmaking and photography, to new media: collage, installation and video are showcased. Many of the artists are well recognized and represented in museum collections.

Sara Schandt, whose work was featured in Chicago’s Museum of Contemporary Art in 2007, was commissioned to make a unique piece for the InterContinental Hotel. Schnadt works with networks, fibers, and the concept of mapping to create web-like structures in space.

ABOUT INTERCONTINENTAL O’HARE’S ART COLLECTION:

The InterContinental O’Hare embraces all things artistic. The hotel’s spacious gallery spaces are cared for by two curators. Works are featured not only in the exhibition spaces, but also adorn guest floors. Each floor’s elevator foyer features a different wall-sized shot of abandoned city scenes, and every guest room has original paintings, screen prints, and sculptures. Beyond works in the featured Crossroads exhibition visitors can enjoy pieces that are part of the hotel’s permanent collection, including screen prints by Robert Rauschenberg, color etchings by Tony Fitzpatrick, and a large scale painting by Wesley Kimler.

A stay at the year-old InterContinental O’Hare virtually includes a complimentary education in art. Employees and guests alike are invited to immerse themselves in the artistic ambiance the hotel provides and are encouraged to roam the hotel and admire the unique art on display, or request a complimentary gallery tour. “The ‘museo’ concept showcases how the hotel embraces the arts – sculpture, canvas, architecture, photography, music and culinary – enhancing our guests’ stay and fueling a passion for experiencing culture,” says General Manager David Hall.

ABOUT THE INTERCONTINENTAL O’HARE HOTEL:

The InterContinental O’Hare is a destination in itself. Beyond luxury guest rooms, state of the art meeting facilities and ballrooms, the hotel offers entertainment, dining, and cultural experiences that set it apart from competitors. Leisure travelers, business professionals and local residents can enjoy and appreciate music and comedy performance in the newly opened Montrose Room, and dine at one of three top quality on-site restaurants, including McCormick & Schmick’s and The Capital Grille.
