The EPA has unveiled a new interactive map to help you find the biggest greenhouse gas emitters in any area, including your own hometown.
The new map shows the major polluters (any power plant, refinery or other facility that puts out more than 25,000 metric tons per year) for any location, according to 2010 figures.
The EPA reports:
For the first time, comprehensive greenhouse gas (GHG) data reported directly from large facilities and suppliers across the country are now easily accessible to the public through EPA's GHG Reporting Program. The 2010 GHG data released on January 11, 2012 includes public information from facilities in nine industry groups that directly emit large quantities of GHGs, as well as suppliers of certain fossil fuels and high global warming gases. More information.
The largest polluters in the United States are typically city power plants and the top ten are in Georgia (two), Montana, Ohio, Indiana, Alabama, Missouri, Texas, Michigan and Indiana.
In Minnesota, top polluters include Sherburne County, Boswell Energy Center, Flint Hills Resources Pine Bend Refinery, Allen S King and Black Dog.
In Southwest Minnesota top polluters include ADM of Mankato, CHS Oil Seed Processing of Mankato, Highwater Ethanol of Lamberton, Hormel Foods of Austin, the Key City/Wilmarth Plant of Mankato, Lyon County, Mankato Energy Center, Northstar Ethanol of Lake Crystal, Blue Earth County's Ponderosa Landfill and Swift Pork Company of Worthington.
