The buzz about the opening of a Westside Intelligentsia location has been so loud on the web, it’s registered on the Richter scale. No matter where you’ve been getting your coffee, a trip to 1331 Abbot Kinney Boulevard in Venice should be on your to-do list.
Doug Zell, the owner, seeks to “bring down the barrier between customer and barista” by designing a progressive coffee bar experience the likes of which I’m anxious to try. When I find the time and energy to drive to Venice (three freeways and at least an hour away), I anticipate the following:
- A greeting from my own private, highly trained barista who will lead me to a spot at the high-tech espresso bar.
- A steampunk atmosphere
- The chance to watch one of their two $11,000 Clover coffeemakers in action, in person
- Time to enjoy a stellar drink, without worrying about the line behind me
- The chance to chat with a barista that really knows coffee
- An industrial strength caffeine high because I plan to try several drinks
- Killer pastries (There goes my diet.)

Hours of operation
6 am – 10 pm Sunday – Thursday
6 am – 11 pm Friday
