"Instagranny" has taken over the online photo and video-sharing networking site Instagram, thanks in part to an adorable great-grandma and her loving 18-year-old great-grandson. In a heartwarming story of a teen’s desire to document his great-grandmother’s final days, we can’t help but chuckle at the antics of 80-year-old Betty Simpson, who is dying from cancer.
Betty’s account, under the user name grandmabetty33, now has over 75,000 followers. Simpson’s family is overwhelmed, as is dear Betty.
On March 10, Zack wrote the following and posted it to his great-grandma’s account:
Just a huge thank you to all the followers who follow Grandma Betty. It’s a joy, to see a big smile on her face when I tell her everyday she has yet another hundred followers. I truly think that you all have helped her fight cancer, and it really means the world to me and my family. Let’s continue to spread the word that cancer CAN be fought, and being Happy while fighting it is most certainly possible.
"He loves me so much, that's why he did it. He doesn't want to lose me and he's just good to me," Simpson said of her great-grandson. "I didn't even know he was doing this," she told ABC.
One of the most popular posts is this video clip of Grandma Betty getting her groove on to Pharrell Williams' hit song "Happy." (Pharrell is one of her 75K followers too by the way.)
Commenter and follower dixiejulz summed up what we are all thinking with this post:
You are an amazing woman grandma Betty. I lost my Nana to cancer years back and she was my b.f.f. I called her every day. She passed away in 2001 and wish this technology was around to save beautiful moments of her, just like you, she would dance. No matter how sick she was, she always had a smile for me no matter how bad her treatments made her feel. I'm now watching everyday to pretend you’re my new grandma. Your family loves you so much and now does America. You are leaving an amazing legacy behind. You make so many smile. I love you even though I don't know you. God bless grandma Betty and keep smiling and dancing! XO
Simpson said she has almost died twice already from her battle with cancer, and that her great-grandson spends time with her every day, capturing snippets of her life and posting them for her.
