Based on the true life story of William Wilberforce, one of the foremost abolitionists of slavery, and champion of humanitarian causes; Amazing Grace is a powerful film of courage, commitment and humility in power.
Wonderfully filmed, with high quality set design and costuming, the strong and accomplished cast includes: Ioan Gifford of The Fantastic Four series, Benedict Cumberbatch from Star Trek-Into Darkness, and Albert Finney as John Newton, the former slave ship captain and writer of the famous classic hymn, Amazing Grace.
The story follows from the beginning to latter days of the life’s work and political aspirations of Wilberforce (Gifford), and his close friend William Pitt (Cumberbatch). While rising through the political ranks they fought tirelessly, and often thanklessly, alongside others to bring to an end the slave trade in England.
There are a few disturbing scenes portraying the cruelty and suffering within the slave trade, however this film is PG, and a powerful story a family with older children could watch and discuss.
Amazing Grace also delivers an entertaining range of emotions from gripping drama, to humor, to moments showcasing both endurance and frailty of the human spirit.
There is some creative direction with the portrayal of the story compared to actual events, but foremost the intent stays true to the point of the film; telling the powerful story of dedicated men, and women, who accomplished one of the most important achievements of their time.
