Boca Juniors debuted in the Clausura tournament with a win over Olimpo at La Bombonera on Friday night 2-0. They surely silenced critics regarding their summer form by being able to show their solid play in all lines. Albeit the opponent was not one that would make boots quake, Boca were still able to dominate in all facets and continue their torrid pace.
Juan Román Riquelme was the man of the night as he returned and looked rather healthy after being kept under wraps for most of the summer. That strategy seemed to have paid off as he looked sharp and Olimpo had few answers as Boca shredded their defenses with intricate passes and easy finishing.
Boca established their intentions rather quick, but they were confused and were not too clear at when it came to finishing. This would last until the 40th minute when Riquelme would find Pablo Mouche. Mouche would head down the ball to Darío Cvitanich and he would begin the Apertura the same way he ended the Apertura- scoring goals. After that first one, the match was pretty much sentenced and Olimpo were backpeddling for the rest of the match.
Boca's second goal was product of chaos in the top of the box that Riquelme settle and darted a pass to Pablo Mouche who on two opportunities slammed it past Matías Ibañez.
More importantly, the Xeneize now have their unbeaten streak at 30 and look to continue their winning ways as they kick off their Copa Libertadores campaign on the road midweek against Venezuela side Zamora.
The other Friday encounter saw Lanús jump out of the gate with a big 4-1 against San Lorenzo, deepening El Ciclón's current crisis. Mariano Pavone placed the final two nails in the San Lorenzo coffin with a brace while Diego Bragheri and Matías Fritzler opened the score for El Granate. The only consolation for Leonardo Carol Madelón was the fact that Uruguayan goalscorer Carlos Bueno scored in his debut. That would still serve as little consolation as they continue to be mired in the Promotion zone.
Now they will have to wait for what Olimpo and Tigre do in their matches. A Tigre win will have them just six point behind San Lorenzo as they look to get out of the Relegation zone. All Boys would have some important separation as they look to reach Unión and get out of Promotion as well.
