Insomniac on 'Sunset Overdrive': It's not just a game, 'it's a frame of mind'

We constantly see post-apocalyptic games that are set in very gray, grim and dark settings, often with the whole of humanity at war with itself trying to survive, plus there are zombies involved all too often. In Sunset Overdrive, Insomniac takes that tired out setting, turns it on its head and adds a whole bunch of color and fun to it.

Sunset Overdrive is very diverse in color on purpose, and its fun, exciting tone is also very deliberate. This game isn't about depression and sadness, but it's more about freedom and enjoyment. Odd things to say about a post-apocalyptic shooter, we know. In an exclusive interview with Sunset Overdrive Creative Director Marcus Smith, he talked to us about the themes that are present in Sunset Overdrive.

"The central theme of Sunset Overdrive is, 'fun in the end times.' It’s an idea of looking at the post-apocalypse as not the end, but a new beginning. We are inundated with monochromatic imagery of end-of-the-world scenarios probably because we’re so afraid of change.

"But what if the world did change overnight and we no longer had the laws or social norms to restrain us? Would we devolve into anarchy as novels like 'The Road' portrays, or would we self-organize and flourish as many do at Burning Man?

"In Sunset Overdrive, it’s a new beginning. It’s about freedom and self-expression. It’s a frame of mind. And what better way to illustrate that shift in mindset than with a bright, inviting and FUN color palette?" Smith said.

Change is always something people are afraid of in the context of their own lives, and it's something we deal with quite often. When it comes to games though, change is a wonderful thing and something we don't see as often as we should. Sunset Overdrive looks to be bring some of that change in an entertaining, pimped out fashion.

You can look at the gameplay, screenshots and social media accounts all associated with Sunset Overdrive, and the common theme in them all is fun and lightheartedness. Insomniac has yet to drop a release date for Sunset Overdrive, but we expect more news on that and the game's multiplayer at E3 2014 in a few weeks.
