Insignares is 700+ singles champ; SMCBA Open deadline Wednesday

Saul Insignares defeated top-seeded Paula Wenzel 211-206 to prevail in the stepladder finals of the 700-Plus Tournament's scratch singles division at Sarasota Lanes on Sunday.
 
By virtue of his victory, Insignares claimed the top prize of $125 in the division, open only to members of the Sarasota-Manatee County USBC Bowling Association who have rolled a certified scratch three-game series of 700 or better.
 
Insignares advanced to the title match with a 237-160 semifinal triumph over Preston Willis, who had won the first two matches of the final-five rolloff by scores of 200-138 over Glenn Jessup and 196-142 over Dylan Clark.
 
While Willis, Clark and Jessup finished third through fifth, Jesse Hawver cashed in the No. 6 position although failing to qualify for the finals.
 
Paul Nicolazzi's 685 score topped the handicap singles competition, open to SMCBA members who haven't rolled a certified 700 series over the past four seasons. Nancy Jarvis was runner-up at 666, while other cashers included Chris Burrow and Ana Thristino (tied at 664), Sandy Combs (660), Lois Vance (631) and Brian Shaffer (614).

Joel and Nancy Jarvis emerged as handicap doubles champions in a category open to teams in which one partner has rolled a 700 or better series while the other hasn't done so over the past four seasons.
 
The Jarvises' winning score was 1,334, while the runner-up duo of Mike Aleshire and Diane Kays totaled 1,325. Tony Kormansek and Willis finished third at 1,324, while Robert Fisher and David Turner (1,322) and Robert Oden and Nikol Purvis (1,265) rounded out the top five. Also cashing were Larry Bryant and Jose Roque (1,254), Ralph Herbst II and Jesse Pipher (1,251) and Gina Quiroz and Wenzel (1,246).
 
Last chance to enter SMCBA Open: Deadline is Wednesday
 
Entries will close at midnight on Wednesday (Feb. 25) for the 63rd annual Sarasota-Manatee County USBA Bowling Association's championship tournament, to be conducted over the next two weekends at Sarasota Lanes.
 
The tournament, open to all certified association members, carries an entry fee of $20 per person per event, plus optional handicap (90 percent of 220) and scratch all-events at $5 each.
 
Saturday squad times will be at noon and 4 p.m., while this Sunday's squads will be at 1 and 5 p.m. On the final Sunday (March 4), there will be only one squad, at 1 p.m.
 
Multiple participation will be permitted only in the five-player team event, but team lineups consisting of more than three individuals entered together won't be accepted.
