Sophisticated cyber-attacks have exposed vulnerabilities for the industries they chosen to target. In 2013 it was considered the year of mega breaches and much has not changed in this calendar year. Motivations or the reasons behind this orchestrated attacks vary from one incident to the next yet the reality is clear that strengthening security must be a top priority for businesses presently on the web.

As the reliance grows on using new innovative technologies, so too comes the necessity to utilize robust security solutions. The obstacles for small-to-medium sized businesses beyond gaining profitability is finding the appropriate security measures that protect their infrastructure and data.

A denial-of-service or a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) request remains of the main arsenals for cyber attackers targeting specific government agencies, commercial entities and even on behalf of other interest groups.

The website security and traffic management platform, Fireblade, provided industry related insight on the nature of these attacks and how their service as a software (SaaS) solution counteracts these complex intrusions.

“Obviously the biggest emerging threat was DDoS, but at the same time malware infections site defacement and data breaches were on the rise as well. Fireblade’s cloud solution mitigates the DDoS attacks before it has the chance to hit your infrastructure and webs server. The multi-layered firewall takes care of both known and unknown threats. Known threats are typically blocked either by signatures or the IP reputation,” said Shay Rapaport, CEO of Fireblade.

He went on to explain in great detail that the multi-layered firewall-which is integrated into the product-resolves known and unknown threats when their clients experience an event such as a cyber-threat. The firewall will block them by signatures or based on IP reputation. For the unknown threats once they are detected this is remedied by detection or blocked by the behavioral firewall.

In 2014 the industries that continually face these detrimental attacks are influential financial institutions, ecommerce websites, pharmaceutical sites and gaming. These specific sectors have vital data hackers want to steal and will go through great lengths to do so.

These days certain regions of the world or specific countries where attacks come from tend to be in China or Russia. However, this changes since the nature of the cyber activity is predicated as a practice or hobby for those hackers that carry such actions out. What is troublesome is the difficulty to understand what the origin of the attack really is.

Plenty of anonymizing tools attackers have access to or can develop meanwhile hide the actual location of their IP addresses that can make tracing impossible at times.

For any business relying heavily on a web infrastructure investing on cyber security will be of great needs to run operations smoothly. Using a SaaS is one of many preventive measures you can include to oversee and monitor your online activity. What you want to shop around for is having a software solution that provides deep, personalized and complete understanding what are the weaknesses of your platform.

Arming your entire enterprise with robust security along with tools that help mitigate potential threats guarantees the reputation of the business. In addition, provide substantial proof to existing or new clients that you are on top of your game when it comes down to dealing with cyber security threats.
