The Insidious sequel, formally known as Insidious: Chapter 2 might soon be joined by Chapter 3. After a record breaking weekend box office, the rumors started circulating today that a third film is in the works.
Producer Jason Blum's interview with Cinema Blend showed up online this morning and in that interview Blum talks about the studio's desire to see another chapter in this story.
I would love to make a third film, but James and Leigh will not hear of it until this movie comes out. So, I’d be thrilled to make a third movie, but there is no current plan to make a third movie at all. Only in my head!
The movie is now out and debuted in first place at the box office with a $41 million weekend. That particular weekend is a record for horror films that are released in September. One of the reasons the film took in so much money is apparently because the fans love it, while the critics hated it.
On sites like IMDB, and Metacritic the reviews from fans and professionals tend to run fairly close. This time, IMDB has given the Insidious sequel a 7.3 out of 10.0 score. Metacritic has tagged the film with a ranking of 43 out of 100.
One hangup with Insidious: Chapter 3 would seem to be the fact that director James Wan doesn't want anything to do with horror flicks from now on.
This is not a particularly new development. Wan made the statement that he was done with horror long before his latest scary movie was released.
That doesn't mean that the Insidious sequel will be the last film in this franchise, plenty of films have continued a story with a brand new man at the helm.
