According to a article posted September 14th by The Hollywood Reporter, 'Insidious Chapter 2' is having a scarily good weekend at the box office.
The FilmDistrict production took in $20 million on Friday (highest grossing single day of all time for September) and looks to be on track for a $42.5 million opening weekend total, which would have it besting the other big summer horror hit, 'The Conjuring.' That film opened to an $41.9 million weekend back in July.
The box office haul has already far outgrossed it's predecessor as the original 'Insidious' opened to $13 million on its opening weekend.
So why is this series such a big hit when just a few weeks ago, the better reviewed hype-filled horror movie 'You're Next' bombed heavily? Well you can click here for our initial analysis of that box-office failure.
But in addition, 'Insidious Part 2' had time on its side (in addition to a fan base established in the original).
Horror movies always play strongest to high school and college students, and 'You're Next' was released on a weekend where many students traveling back to college, or getting prepared for school. With school back in session, 'Insidious 2' was released at the perfect time to regain that crucial demographic.
In the end, I recommend any fans of the 'Insidious' series to watch 'Carnival Of Souls' an eerie obscure 1962 horror movie that heavily influenced 'Insidious' and is ultimately superior. Click here for more info on that cult classic.
