Inside the artist: Oh, Hush! talks Twilight and New Moon

Oh, Hush, the elusive viral breakout band, recorded the song “Irresistible.” A tribute to Bella from Jacob, the band took inspiration from the New Moon trailer. Here’s part two of our two part interview:

Father’s Day is this weekend, and you’ve talked a lot about your kids. What are your plans?

"Our kids" = the Oh, Hush! Kids- our fans, all 50,000 of them!! I just call ‘em "the kids" or "our kids.” But I do plan to give my dad a card + $1 towards a golf outing for this summer :-)

What’s with the New Moon song? What’s your ultimate goal with the song- to get it on the soundtrack? To rile up Team Edward fans?

Last fall I remember all of the kids starting to talk about the Twilight movie coming out. I had never heard of the Twilight books at the time and started asking a few of our kids about the books. One of our awesome fans actually mailed me her copy of the book to read (did I mention how AWESOME our fans are??)!! I read the book in about a week and then instantly went on to New Moon and Eclipse. The rest of the band also started stealing the books from me and the rest is history.

The Twilight books were very inspiring and I remember jotting down little phrases and ideas from the book as I was reading. One day I decided to turn one of those ideas into a full song which became “Irresistible.” I wanted to capture the feelings that Jacob has for Bella in a 3 minute song and that’s what I came up with!

We don’t have any ultimate goal of getting the song on the soundtrack. I mean, we’d love it if they wanted to put it on the soundtrack!! That would be amazing!! And I really think they do need a few upbeat songs for a few of the scenes in the movie (the motorcycle scene or ending credits). But I think we just wanted to share this song with Twilight-fans because we think they’ll get it and enjoy it!

Have you read the books? Seen the movie?

Read all 4 books. And I’ve absolutely seen the movie as well. I LOVED the books!! I felt like the movie could’ve been a lot better than it was. I certainly enjoyed the movie but it just kinda seemed to move along too quickly without really developing the storyline and characters. I realize it’s really hard to condense a 500 page book into 90 minutes. All that to say, I still enjoy the Twilight movie.

I actually have very high hopes for the New Moon movie!! I think all of the actors and actresses have now had a year to grow into their characters a bit. The new producer can learn from all of the mistakes of the previous producer. The budget is probably a bit bigger this time around and given that the Twi-movie was such a huge hit, there’s much higher expectations on New Moon!! All that will lend itself to New Moon being a significantly better movie. I also think that the departures from the book in New Moon that we’re hearing about (or seeing in the trailers) are going to be for the better. I’m not a total book-purist – I don’t mind if they have to change the timeline of a few things or embellish upon certain parts. As long as the general storyline is still intact and the movie is awesome, that’s all that matters!

What team are you on- Edward, Jacob? I’m guessing Bella….why?

Throughout most of the books I would constantly say “Bella is pissing me off!” haha And I am indeed a guy who likes girls… but I never heard anyone say “Team Edward, Team Jacob or Team BELLA??!” It was always “Team Edward or Team Jacob” so I just naturally never really included Bella as one of the options. But I STILL haven’t chosen a team… I hated Jacob for the first 2 books… started liking him more in Eclipse… then on the chapters written from his perspective in Breaking Dawn I thought he was the funniest guy in the world!! So for a while I was leaning Team Edward by default… not because I thought he was the greatest, but because I hated Jacob. But by the end of the series, I think I’m ultimately leaning Team Jacob.

What do you want from Twilight fans? Other fans? How can they best support you and your music endeavor? What are the best places to find you?

We just want to share our music with Twilight fans. It was our existing fans that initially got us into the Twilight series and a lot of our fans are Twilight fans as well. I think Twilight fans would dig our music and everything that we’re all about. For starters the song “Irresistible” is a direct tie-in with Twilight. But beyond that, I think the rest of our songs are something that will appeal to them as well.

Aside from Twittering and Facebooking, the main action can be found on the Oh, Hush! MySpace music page. Not only are they working on a new record, but they have in the works a plethora of Twilight tie-ins leading up to its release.

Oh, Hush! ends the interview with this important tidbit:

People who know us know we like to do all sorts of contests and puzzles and codes and other mind-bending things. Speaking of which, I’m pretty sure the next New Moon is on June 22 (6-22-09)…right??

I am the biggest fan of the Twilight Saga, but I must admit that this song does not suit the mood of the Saga at all and despite that it's terrible. I could barely get through the first minute of it. I'm sorry, I'm sure you are a very nice person but the music is horrific!

@Tella- Really?! I liked it a lot! Regardless, they didn't write it specifically for the soundtrack, rather a tribute to it. But thanks for listening!

@nena- You are correct- the movie New Moon is coming out 11/20- but the next new moon in the sky is on 6/22. Read that entire last paragraph and ponder....

    Thanks for reading! :)
