Insecurity, beliefs and a defensive reaction

If I say to you that you’re a fish, what would your reaction be? Most likely you would direct me to a mental institution, shrug it off or laugh; as you would know this is not true and would be amused by this statement. On the other hand if you were not confident that you were a Human and had some doubt if you were a fish or not then your natural reaction would be to become defensive.

As silly as this example is, it’s the fundamental principle behind those who wish to push their values on to others and argue what they believe in is the only answer. These people use the amount of people that agree with them as the justification of their beliefs. A symptom of the insecure ego and should not be confused with knowledge.

Someone who knows the truth of their existence would not confront those who don’t, as a secure human being knows other people’s opinions are irrelevant in comparison to one’s own personal path. This defensive reaction is exclusive to weak minded followers and their opinions should never be considered as gospel. Conversation of contrasting views are valuable for progress and evolution of the human race.

People who choose to do as their heart leads their will, will always be subject to the jealous glare of those who are not brave enough to bring happiness to themselves. For if they had any ambition in life to be anything more than sheep, they would not be following the lives of anyone else but their own.

I think there is some conflict between these two statements:

"..Someone who knows the truth of their existence would not confront those who don’t, as a secure human being knows other people’s opinions are irrelevant in comparison to one’s own personal path..."

"Conversation of contrasting views are valuable for progress and evolution of the human race."

If "other people's opinions are irrelevant in comparison to one's own personal path," how can "conversation of contrasting views be valuable for progress?"
