Innistrad draft archetype | Blue red flashback

The red/blue flashback archetype in Limited Magic: The Gathering Innistrad hinges upon obtaining multiple copies of Burning Vengeance.  If you’re just picking up good quality flashback cards in your first pack in draft and see a Burning Vengeance come along on the wheel, you may wish to change your values slightly and move into this potentially powerful archetype.  This is not an archetype to force – make sure you’re not battling anyone else at the table for your Vengeances!

You’re able to grab excellent cards without any kind of sacrifice while waiting to see if Burning Vengeance will table – Silent Departure, Grasp of Phantoms, Geistflame, Rolling Temblor (handles zombies, wolves, and humans wonderfully), Think Twice, Forbidden Alchemy, etc.

After acquiring your second or third copy of Burning Vengeance, it’s possible to move into some of the normally marginal flashback cards, as they are now shockingly more effective.  Dream Twist and Desperate Ravings can become acceptable deck fare with the correct framework in place, and even Runic Repetition can become a possibility.

This archetype allows for play of some other cards that are normally marginal at best, such as Delver of Secrets – he’ll have a much better chance to undergo Kafkaesque metamorphosis with your deck full of flashback sorceries and instants.

Since only a few of the flashback cards are high picks, it’s not necessary to alter the rest of your values much, although you may want to prioritize your third or fourth copy of Burning Vengeance over quite a bit in pack three.  Players can spend their early picks on quality cards that don’t require the archetype to function, and the end result is a turbocharged blue red burn deck that almost nothing can compete with once the engine gets running.

This Innistrad draft archetype can typically support only one player in earnest, and savvy drafters at the table will be after the quality flashback goods anyway, so it does require a bit of a setup to achieve – but the results yield sweet, fiery revenge!
