On Thursday, an inmate at the Western Correctional Institute near Cumberland was sentenced by an Allegany Circuit Court to 17 years for beating his cellmate to death with a TV set on February 13 2011.
Thirty eight year old Michael Boyer who had been serving a 50 year sentence for eight counts of robbery with deadly weapon charges in Anne Arundel, Harford, Baltimore counties and Baltimore City since 2003 was originally charged with first degree murder in the attack but accepted a plea deal for second degree murder.
The victim, 37 year old Timothy Davis had been serving a 50 year sentence for attempted first degree murder and drug and handgun convictions.
Officials say they don't know what triggered the attack that took place in the cell that the two men shared but Michael must begin serving his new sentence as soon as he is done serving his previous one.
