Mount Lemmon- A 14-year-old boy owes five hikers a debt of gratitude for coming to his aid after being stranded in a cave on Mount Lemmon, just north of Tucson. The boy was found trapped inside Pepper Sauce Cave, located on the north side of the mountain, by five hikers who just happened to be passing by on Saturday.
The teen was reportedly about 50 feet into the cave when he fell, causing injuries to his leg. The hikers say, the boy was showing signs of shock and hypothermia, causing the hikers to act quickly to rescue the boy.
The hikers used a plastic picnic table as a stretcher, nearby tree branches to act as a splint for the injured leg and a tarp to secure the teen. This allowed the hikers to carry the teen from the cave, where he was then airlifted to a local hospital.
Authorities urge hikers to follow hiking safety tips, which include:
- Never go hiking alone
- Know where you’re going
- Take some basic gear, such as matches
- Plenty of water
- And, use common sense
