"Inglourious Basterds" should have been renamed to "Upset Theater Owner"

Inglourious Basterds movie poster.

Rating 3 out of 5.

Inglourious Basterds is directed by Quentin Tarantino and is a remake from the Italian film The Inglorious Bastards.  This version and the original are quite different, but this review will only reflect this film and not be compared to the original.

Set during World War II in German occupied France, this film stars Brad Pitt as the leader of a group known as "The Basterds".  "The Basterds" are set with the task of sneaking into a French town and possibly assassinating Adolph Hitler in order to stop the war.

Upon seeing the trailer for this film, I was really geared up to see this film.  But I felt that this film really did not go anywhere.  It was a very long film, it clocks in at just over 2 hours and 30 minutes.  This film could have been saved by a lot of editing to reduce the overall time.  But my main issue is the title of the film is Inglourious Basterds, we hardly see the Basterds at work.  Instead we see slow scenes with some what decent acting.  But where is the action?  I am willing to bet that whenever anyone mentions this film, all they are going to be talking about are scenes with Brad Pitt.  Which is a good thing because Brad Pitt did such a great job, but it is a bad thing because when he is not in the scene, the only thing that is keeping us motivated to continue watching this film is the possibility that Brad Pitt will be in the next scene.

Tarantino should really change the title of this film, the Basterds are hardly in it, it is more like they make a cameo.  In fact I am sure that if you were to remove the Basterd scenes from the film, the film might clock in at 1 hour and 30 minutes, in my opinion that is not worth the wait to see a lot of slow scenes just for a group of people that are in the title.  I mean if this was a horror film (Jaws, Jason, Predator, etc.) then we expect the film to not really include them till the end.  But this is billed as an action film, all about the Basterds and we hardly see them.  In fact we hardly get a chance to meet and get to know all of them, we only get a chance to find out about a few of them, which adds another layer of disappointment because we want to know them.  Instead we get to know about a few people that we did not want to know about and must live with it.

I am sure there will be a lot of bad comments from the Tarantino fans, but seriously people don't be lemmings and "follow the name".  Hell, all of my favorite directors have had movies that I didn't like.  Just because I have a favorite director that does not mean that I'm going to mindlessly follow them and love everything they do. Are there films that Tarantino did that I liked, yes there are.  But this sadly is not one of them.

You might've missed the point of the movie. This is one of Tarantino's best films. The tension, acting, cinematography, soundtrack, etc are just incredible.

The film was called Inglorious Basterds, but it wasn't only about that group. You can call a Nazi an 'inglorious bastard' as well.... They thought of themselves as glorious protectors of the third-reich, yet they were doing despicable deeds, thus they were 'inglorious'. This is the parallel that I believe Tarantino was going for.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but not every Tarantino movie has to be a straight-up action flick. Tarantino mixed action and witty dialogue masterfully in this movie.

This is whats wrong with our society today. we don't appreciate movies anymore - we just want to see things blow up. This was an amazing movie that appreciates subtleties and focuses on character development and deep human emotion. A masterpiece. We are a society that needs constant movement and action. Any plot or dialogue feel is lost at the wayside.

    Maybe you should watch 007.

I agree with many of the comments above, but I am ultimately amazed at your poor grammar and weak analysis. This comes across as a blog written by an eighth grader.

Kamuela - Saw the movie last night, and couldn't disagree with you more. Typical Tarantino brilliance and outside-the-box intelligence in film making ... always unpredictable. There are plenty of low IQ, action films with atrocious editing out there these days ... why don't you stick to reviewing those since you like them so much. Better yet, find another line of work!
