According to statistical data obtained by National Geographic core samples. the sea level has rose .13 inches a year for the last 20 years. The infographic by Distance Learning is designed to bring awareness to the constant rise of sea levels.
The rising sea levels infographic states the reasons for the continued increase and the affect it has on human populations. The burning of fossil fuels and various other human activities have caused huge amounts of heat-trapping gases to be released into the atmosphere which contributed to rising sea levels.
Along with the human population, the natural environment is also affected by the rise in the current sea level. There are 13 out of 20 of the world's largest cities located near the coast line and face potential flooding as a result of the constant sea level.
More than 600 million people in these coastal regions live just 10 meters above sea level. For every foot of sea level rise, it's expected that 100 feet of coastal flooding happens.
There are more than 12,000 miles of coastline located within the United States. The infographic states that more than half of all Americans live around coastal cities and towns.
