Fishing is considered a relaxing activity that many divulge in when possible. The degree in which people overfish can have a devastating impact on the marine ecosystem. According the infographic released by Distance Learning overfishing occurs when the fish are caught faster than they can reproduce.
Overfishing has become a concern in situations that involve large amounts of fishing boats are gathered in one area. The impact of overfishing can affect the food security for over a billion people. In addition, it destroys the marine ecosystem.
Due to the amount of overfishing conducted, Distance Learning created an overfishing infographic to bring awareness to the issue. It is their hope that it will encourage others to be more concerned about their environment.
The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization estimates that over half of the world's fish stocks are fully exploited, and less than one percent is recovering from depletion.
Because of the release of new factory boats there continues to be and annual increase in catches of 7 percent since the 1950s. The infographic states that although catching the fish is good for feeding people, the constant overfishing isn't leaving enough fish behind to breed.
