Bill Cosby has had one of the most incredible and complete careers in all of show business. He's a stand-up comedian, an actor, a singer, a teacher, a producer and an activist. He's long been one of America's most cherished performers and one of the funniest stand-ups ever.
His humor came to the forefront in 1963 when he appeared on Johnny Carson's 'The Tonight Show'. Carson, another of America's funniest stand-ups, was obviously as big a fan of Cosby's as much of America would become. Cosby's humor was a collection of anecdotes from his childhood and starred his parents, siblings and friends. He never swore or worked blue and took a lot of heat from critics who pointed out that he never focused on race in his routines.
Cosby was equally quick to point out that his white audience was more able to identify with his positions because of that fact. He said he was doing as much for good race relations as the next guy because his focus was on the similarities rather than the differences. Cosby has remained consistently faithful to that position for fifty years which is why he's been so admired for each of those years.
