WELCOME TO THE PUNCH from Momentum Pictures opens March 15, 2013. Stars: Mark Strong, James McAvoy and Andrea Riseborough. Directed by Eran Creevy ("Shifty").
The story of a former criminal, Jacob Sternwood (Mark Strong), who is forced to return to London when his son is involved in a heist gone wrong. This gives Detective Max Lewinsky (James McAvoy) one last chance to catch the man he's always been after. As they face off, they uncover a deeper conspiracy they both must solve in order to survive.
This film's executive producer was famed director Ridley Scott ("Blade Runner", "Alien", "Prometheus") so there must be something there. Whatever it is it doesn't show up in the trailer. That is to say that there is running, shooting and explosions but that's not enough to grip anyone's attention. Not these days.
Still, enough of Scott's body of work makes his judgement sound enough to trust. All of his films have made money so it's too early to dismiss this one out of hand. Remember--he did not direct this film. That could end up being a flaw.
Also new this week: "THE CALL" starring Halle Berry and Abigail Breslin. Directed by Brad Anderson.
Berry is a 911 operator who receives a call from a girl (Breslin) who has been abducted. She soon realizes she must confront a killer from her past in order to save the girl's life. (Pretty gutsy for a 911 operator. Most of them just contact the police and let them do the heavy work).
