"LUCY" from Universal opens Fri., July 25, 2014.
STARRING: Scarlett Johansson, Morgan Freeman, Choi Min-sik.
DIRECTOR: Luc Besson ("The Fifth Element", "The Professional").
SYNOPSIS: A woman (Johansson) is forced to become a drug mule. Rather than just carrying the drug, it enters her system and turns her into a lethal vixen who can absorb knowledge with ease, move things with her mind, see into the future and feel no pain at all if she chooses not to.
Be warned. The end of this film is so far off the rails it's never coming back (as it were). Despite that, Scarlett Johansson is so cute, hot and charming that the ride is delightfully fun. It helps cover the overall stupidity of this concept. To be sure, this is not the first film to feature an omniscient being. It's just so silly to believe it could happen to this person this way.
Yet, it does and Lucy's life takes a pretty severe left turn because of it. her little adventure is being compared to "2001: A Space Odyssey", "The Matrix", "The Tree of Life" and even "Transcendence". It's unclear why those comparisons would be logical but that's what makes movie-watching so subjective. This film makes so little sense that all comparisons become somewhat valid and have to make no sense at all. In the end, it doesn't matter what film or films this is like. It only matters that it not be taken seriously despite Besson's track record.
And that ending? Sorry. See the film for yourself and make up your own mind. Just enjoy the pretty girl in skin-tight outfits and don't worry about much else. This isn't really considered a date movie as such but if you take a woman with you, don't enjoy Ms. Johansson too much. She might insist on seeing "Hercules" and comparatively few men are in the shape Dwayne Johnson is. No one wants to live up to a comparison like that.
