"HERCULES" in 2D and 3D from Paramount/MGM opens Fri., July 25, 2014.

STARRING: Dwayne Johnson, John Hurt, Ian McShane, Ingrid Berdal and Joseph Fiennes.

DIRECTOR: Brett Ratner ("Rush Hour"; "X-men: The Last Stand").

SYNOPSIS: Hercules (Johnson), haunted by a sin from his past, is forced to become a mercenary. Along with five faithful companions, he travels ancient Greece selling his services for gold, using his legendary reputation to intimidate enemies. When the benevolent ruler of Thrace and his daughter seek his help to defeat a savage warlord, Hercules must become the hero he once was.

Some people are saying that Dwayne Johnson is all wrong for this role and, because of that, this film is not as good as it could be. The fact is that people have been saying stupid things like that about Johnson his whole career. This guy works hard, takes each role seriously and devotes himself to his craft. He becomes the man he's portraying and it usually turns out well...like it did for this film.

It's everything one could expect from an action/adventure movie. Lots of action, imaginative creatures, a solid cast and story, well-choreographed stunts and some good humor thrown in for balance. It's a war movie as well, meaning some of the characters one gets emotionally involved with will not survive to the end credits.

This movie is far superior to "The Legend of Hercules" which was released earlier this year. Johnson is far more believable in an action role like this having done "The Mummy", "The Scorpion King", "The Rundown" and so many more. Even the briefest glance tells one that Johnson is still in reasonably good physical condition. The important thing is he's not afraid to try any role and do the best he can. That counts for a lot.
