"PLANES: FIRE AND RESCUE" in 3D from Disney opens Friday, July 18, 2014.

STARRING: Dane Cook, Julie Bowen, Stacy Keach, Brad Garrett, Teri Hatcher, Curtis Armstrong, Ed Harris, Fred Willard, Anne Meara, Erik Estrada, Hal Holbrook and Barry Corbin.

DIRECTOR: Bobs Gannaway

SYNOPSIS: Crop-dusting plane Dusty Crophopper learns that his engine is damaged and he may never race again He is forced to shift gears and is launched into the world of aerial firefighting.

Director Roberts (Bobs) Gannaway said he wanted to change the theme from a race movie ("Planes") to a disaster movie with different characters and voices. He succeeded in making this different but it's almost too formulaic to be original. The various vehicles (characters) are introduced, a fire starts and they must all work together to put it out. That's pretty basic and probably could have been condensed to a half-hour special on the Disney Channel.

There are some funny moments throughout and some interesting characters. Nothing contained in the dialogue will offend the kids but some of the double-entendre might confuse them a bit.

Gannaway did research the subject fairly extensively, working with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection and the U.S. Forest Services. It took a year before starting work on the story which is based on real situations. That kind of devotion to the art and this great cast deserves some accolades and this film is easily the best one being released this weekend. "Sex Tape" will out-gross it but still...
