"DELIVER US FROM EVIL" from Jerry Bruckheimer/Screen Gems opens Wed., July 2, 2014.

STARRING: Eric Bana, Edgar Ramirez and Olivia Munn.

DIRECTOR: Scott Derrickson

SYNOPSIS: N.Y.P.D. officer Ralph Sarchie (Bana), struggling with his own personal issues, begins investigating a series of disturbing and inexplicable crimes. He joins forces with an unconventional priest (Ramirez), schooled in the rituals of exorcism, to combat the demonic possessions terrorizing their city.

Many horror movies do not live up to their billing. Most of them are more humorous than scary, more ridiculous than believable and usually a colossal waste of time. Not this one. There are definitely some moments that will make your skin crawl. There are no cheap tricks either, like cats tipping over garbage cans or the girl next door needing to use the phone. This is a genuinely creepy scare flick that will get to you.

Eric Bana is an established actor who has done some very dark drama before but nothing this intense. He excels at it in an alarmingly real way, making any viewer believe these events are actually happening to him. Coupled with Olivia Munn, Bana and his personal issues become the viewer's issues and the surrounding complications intensify what's happening to both of them. There's enough detail contained in this story to make Stephen King proud and no one spends as much time on details as Mr. King. (Have you read The Stand?) This story is not that complete but the point is made time and time again and there are no guessing games as the climax builds.

Although the story is "based on actual events", it's not a bio-pic as much at is is a well-told story. Dare it be said that this is in the tradition of Stephen King or Edgar Allen Poe. The story, the characters, the lighting, the effects and the acting all come together to make this a film you won't soon forget. Eat your popcorn quickly and enjoy watching the Big Apple turn rotten to the core.
