Info 101: Movieclips 206: Fox turns into a predator against Predator

The ugly phrase "reboot treatment" has again reared its ugly face. Twentieth Century Fox has turned it on the Predator franchise with the intent of remaking (rebooting) the original movie that made Arnold Schwarzenegger a larger-than-life action star beyond Terminator. It was a superb thriller relating the story of a group of commandos sent on a trumped-up rescue mission who find out that they are being hunted by an unseen alien killer. The cast included Jesse Ventura, Carl Weathers and Bill Duke, among others. It was directed by John McTiernan ("Die Hard", "Die Hard 2").

Now Fox wants a new treatment by screen-writing prodigy Shane Black and they also want him to direct it. Black wrote the screenplays for "Lethal Weapon" and "Monster Squad". There's no reason to believe Black incapable of doing a good job on this project. The problem is it doesn't need to be done, especially without Arnold.

The original film in 1986 is perfect the way McTiernan filmed it. The story has stood the test of time, the creature is one of the most inventive ever and the acting was nearly flawless. There's no need to try to improve on perfection, especially since the other movies in the franchise did not generate much interest.

"Predator 2" starred Danny Glover and Bill Paxton. It was good but not great. The prequel, "Predators", was also good but not great. The two "Alien vs. Predator" films were neither good not great, a far cry from what everyone hoped they would be. If anything, "Predator 2" is the one that should be rebooted to take the series away from Arnold and his mates. Even younger fans still appreciate the original film as is. The executives at Fox are slow on the uptake if they don't realize that fact.
