"JERSEY BOYS" from Warner Brothers opens Fri., June 20, 2014.
STARRING: John Lloyd Young, Erich Bergen, Vincent Piazza, Michael Lomenda and Christopher Walken.
DIRECTOR: Clint Eastwood ("Gran Torino", "J. Edgar", "Mystic River")
SYNOPSIS: Four young men from the wrong side of the tracks in New Jersey come together to form the 1960s rock group The Four Seasons.
This will be filed under "everyone has an ....... and no one needs another one". Some people considered The Four Seasons to be as, if not more, important as The Beatles, hard as that is to accept. This writer was not one of those who was swept away with that falsetto warbling of Frankie Valli. "Walk Like a Man" but sing like an eight year-old girl? Please. This band built a career on a string of novelty records and now Clint Eastwood has chosen to glorify them by turning a stage musical into a film musical. To quote Bruce Willis from "Die Hard", "Yippee-ki-yay, ...."
One refuses to take issue with a personal fave and a living legend. If this subject matter is what Clint Eastwood chooses to direct, he certainly has every right to do so. By the same token, one has every right to decline to indulge this effort when one is not a fan of the subjects. It's the vicious circle of life. The film is probably great but it's outside the realm of what one can accept.
The other side of the coin is that one will not discourage anyone from seeing this film. If you are or were a fan of the Four Seasons, go, enjoy, buy the soundtrack and the video and go nuts enjoying it. It's your time and money so have fun.
