"EDGE OF TOMORROW" from Warner Brothers opens Fri., June 6, 2014.

STARRING: Tom Cruise, Emily Blunt, Bill Paxton, Brendan Gleeson and Charlotte Riley.

DIRECTOR: Doug Limon ("Go", "The Bourne Identity", "Jumper")

SYNOPSIS: The film is set in the distant future during wartime between a race of aliens known as Mimics and the human race. Lt. Col. Bill Cage(Cruise), an untrained and ill-equipped officer, is dumped into a suicide mission but gets stuck in a time loop on his last day in the battle.

Cue the melodramatic organ and prepare for a major celebration. It's true! Warner Brothers is offering a completely original film with a concept that has never ever been filmed before. This guy gets caught in a time loop and has to re-live the same day over and over till he gets it right. It's refreshing to see something so unique, so...huh? What's "Groundhog Day"? Are you kidding? Oh, Man! What? This is the thirtieth variation? O.M.G.!!!

Well, despite this mind-crushing development, at least the critics can all (finally) agree on one thing--Tom Cruise can star in an action movie. What a colossal relief that they've been able to determine that fact, especially after four "Mission: Impossible" films, "Knight and Day", "Top Gun", "Jack Reacher" and several sci-fi thrillers.

Having noted this universal approval of Cruise's career choice, it can be stated that this film is somewhat engaging and almost as playful as "Groundhog Day". For a concept that has been done and redone this many times, Cruise and Blunt definitely co-star in one such version. It's not so much a stupid waste of $26 million as it is a great way to side-step doing anything new, risky or original. Way to go, Tom. Now, how about reliving that dance on Oprah's couch for us? That was really precious, too.
