"THE QUIET ONES" from Lionsgate opens Fri., April 25, 2014.

STARRING: Sam Claflin, Jared Harris, Olivia Cooke and Erin Richards.

DIRECTOR: John Pogue ("Quarantine 2: Terminal")

SYNOPSIS: Inspired by true events and based on the theory that paranormal activity is created by human negative energy, the story follows a professor who uses some of his students to perform a series of tests on a young patient, pushing her to the edge of sanity. As frightening occurrences begin to take place, the group quickly realizes they have triggered a force more terrifying and evil than they ever imagined.

This film should be great but one said that about "Transcendence" last week, little realizing how badly that one would tank. "The Quiet Ones" shows all the elements of being an excellent and creepy paranormal thriller but one is hesitant to endorse a film about a group of people who set out to "create a poltergeist". This concept is mostly too silly for words with the exceptions of "far-fetched" and "ridiculous".

Oh, sure, it's very creepy hearing the little nursery rhyme about the quiet ones read by the little girl. Her voice is appropriately sinister and the music is spine-tingling but that only lasts about 33 seconds. After that, it's a lot of sight gags and cat-in-the-garbage-can type cheap thrills until director Pogue finally gets down to business. Even then, this is all very Nightmare on Elm Street rehash without Freddie.

Ah, for the days when scare films were actually scary and Johnny Depp made really good films that didn't tank. At least he won't make another "Alice in Wonderland" or "Pirates of the Caribbean" film. What? Oh, no. Both of them? Good grief.
