STARRING: Shailene Woodley, Kate Winslet, Ray Stevenson, Mekhi Phifer, Maggie Q, Jai Courtney, Miles Teller, Zoe Kravitz and Ashley Judd.
DIRECTOR: Neil Burger ("Limitless").
SYNOPSIS: Divergent is set in a dystopian future in Chicago where people are divided into distinct factions based on their personalities. Tris Prior (Woodley) is warned she is divergent (no distinct personality) and will never fit into any one group. When she discovers a conspiracy to destroy all divergents, she must figure out why being divergent is so dangerous before it's too late.
This is an interesting concept. People divided by personalities and the ones who don't fit in are isolated. Based on Veronica Roth's book of the same title, it's written for the screen by Evan Daugherty ("Snow White and the Huntsman") and Vanessa Taylor ("Game of Thrones"). The studio wants this to big like "Twilight" or "The Hunger Games". Will it be?
It's hard to say offhand. It looks to be passable at best and dull as dirt at worst. Woodley, a newcomer, is kind of cute with a slight resemblance to Natalie Portman but she may not be the dominant type like Kristin Stewart or Jennifer Lawrence.
Or...she could be better than either of them. It's a tossup. At least she's not part of an insipid vampire storyline so that's a plus. Not everyone understands why Jennifer Lawrence is considered so hot when she's actually one of a million. Still, it's only fair this film be given a chance to succeed or fail because so much of what Hollywood has released this year has been so pathetic and lame. The next big thing or not, part two ("Insurgent") will be released in 2015 and part three ("Allegiant") in 2016.
