"DEVIL'S DUE" from 20th Century Fox opens Fri., Jan. 17, 2010.

STARRING: Zach Gilford, Allison Miller, Colin Walker and Sam Anderson.

DIRECTORS: Tyler Gillett and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin ("V/H/S").

SYNOPSIS: After a mysterious lost night on their honeymoon, a newlywed couple finds themselves dealing with an earlier-than-planned pregnancy. While recording everything for posterity, the husband begins to notice odd behavior in his wife which they initially write off as nerves. But as months pass, it becomes evident that the dark changes to her body and mind have a much more sinister origin.

You see? This is just the kind of thing that can go wrong when you drink too much booze and do strange drugs on your honeymoon. This should be a lesson to all young couples who tie the knot too quickly. Don't be messin' where you ought not be messin' or you'll get burned.

It's difficult to separate this film from "Rosemary's Baby" despite the obvious differences. For one thing, it's not nearly as boring. Ira Levin's book was fascinating and exciting but director Roman Polanski managed to suck most of that excitement out of the film by bogging it down with too much detail. It was uncharacteristic of Polanski and these new directors do not make that mistake.

The problem is that playing with religious beliefs leaves too much room for interpretation. The Lord moves in mysterious ways and so does the Devil. We get that so this movie comes down to what you believe and what scares you. For many of us, getting married is terrifying enough let alone a pregnancy with devilish intervention.
