"AMERICAN HUSTLE" from Columbia Pictures opens Wed., Dec. 18, 2013.

STARRING: Robert De Niro, Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper, Jeremy Renner, Amy Adams, Jennifer Lawrence and Colleen Camp.

DIRECTOR: David O. Russell ("Flirting With Disaster", "Three Kings", "Silver Linings Playbook").

Synopsis: The film, a fictional take on the 1970s FBI sting operation known as Abscam, follows a con-man (Bale) from the Bronx who gets entangled with FBI agent Richie Di Maso (Cooper) as they try to turn the tables on other cons mobsters and politicians--namely the volatile mayor of impoverished Camden, N.J.

It is said that everything happens for a reason. Sometimes the reason is crystal clear--like water freezing below 32 degrees Fahrenheit (especially in Minnesota). Other times, the reason is vague and obscured--like why a certain film was made. This one for example. It seems too trite to say it's just to make money but that seems to be the sole reason for this film to exist. It certainly can't be for any entertainment value because it's not entertaining.

Christian Bale is too talented to continue along this path--making stupid movie after stupid movie. He should certainly be able to do better than this or "Out of the Furnace". We get it. He doesn't want to be Batman any longer. Fine. Just spare us this garbage.

It's easier to understand why Jennifer Lawrence would do this film. She has very limited talent but she's hot right now, riding the success of the two "Hunger Games" films. She'll also be starring in the third segment so this is just a throwaway. The project an fail and she'll walk away clean. No one will remember this crud so why would she care?

Amy Adams should be used to second rate clunkers by now but De Niro? Please. This is a new low for him and he was in "The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle". True, he's worked with David Russell before ("Silver Linings Playbook") but that doesn't mean he had to go back again. Oh well! See it if you must but it's your choice to get hustled.
