"FREE BIRDS" from Relativity Media opens Fri., Nov. 1, 2013.
STARRING: Owen Wilson, Woody Harrelson, George Takei, Amy Poehler, Colm Meaney, Keith David and Lesley Nicol.
DIRECTOR: Jimmy Hayward ("Horton Hears a Who!"; "Jonah Hex").
Two turkeys (Wilson, Harrelson) from opposite sides of the tracks must put aside their differences and team up to travel back in time to change the course of history--and get turkey off the Thanksgiving menu for good.
Ah-Ha! Another blatant attempt at thought control by the Hollywood media machine...and disguised as a child-friendly cartoon no less. Nice try. Shameful but nice anyway. As a meat-loving carnivore, one's holiday table will include turkey until the day one can no longer crawl to the table and gum down that succulent feast. Count on it. One's day job has toughened one's skin to the point that names bounce off one like water off a turkey's back.
Having said that, taken for what this is--it's still entertaining. Owen Wilson is almost always funny and his laid-back voice acting is as good as his live-action stuff. Same for Harrelson. This is a solid cast voicing a fairly solid story. It'll provide seconds, even minutes of humor and then disappear into the wind like vapor from one's e-cigarette following a satisfying dinner of turkey and mashed spuds. Yum. Keep in mind that this guy (Hayward) directed "Jonah Hex". Remember that high-class cinematic achievement? Precisely. Have a nice Thanksgiving dinner, meat-eaters.
